Google news is a fantastic tool to explore current new stories. It links you to a myriad of sources for current event from around the world. As well, there is a search function on the page that allows you to search for a topic across news sources.
CBC news is the homepage for the full CBC site (not just the kids version). This is a more comprehensive news site, but will have articles that may be sponsored, so make sure you evaluate your source using the CRAAP analysis!
This Smithsonian resource is an excellent source for media articles for a Grade 6 audience. You can choose difficulty level and most content is available without an account.
This Canadian news source will give you access to topics outside of Canada, as well. It also has a great search function that will help you find articles on topics of interest.
